Bird
study and photography have been among my major passions since childhood. My
first bird photographs were made while I was in the 5th grade with an Argoflex
twin lens reflex camera while I Iay in the grass throwing bread crumbs to house
sparrows trying to attract them within range.
I
started photographing flowers by trying to document my father's collection of
orchids and thereby learned that even the most beautiful flowers do not automatically
yield great photographs! Unless otherwise noted, the flowers on this site are
wildflowers photographed on location in natural light.
My
interest in landscapes evolved from photographing birds and flowers. While on
location for these subjects it is hard not to resond to the beauty of the surrounding
landscapes. In addition, my two primary mentors, Dr. Ronald Neilson and Leonard
Conkling, are eminent landscape photographers. In this category I include close-up
and abstract images of natural subjects.
Wildlife
photography is a natural outgrowth of bird photography. While searching for
birds, surprising opportunities for wildlife photos may develop. Sometimes these
surprises require retreat as quickly as possible.
This
category includes photographs made during travel to specific locations both
within and outside the U.S. In addition to presenting natural and man-made beauty
these collections are intended to convey a sense of place
